Communication. A leader must be clear, succinct and engaging in explaining to team members their actions stating what, when, where and who shall be involved in all on-coming programs/actions. Communication is a great tool a leader uses in facilitating whatever they do, whether through meetings or through multimedia channels like letters, emails, telephone conversations, group presentations or engagement meetings. Clarity of message, audience analysis and understanding of the issues requiring immediate attention will make the leader an effective communicator.
Problem solving. The main preoccupation of a leader should be problem solving. When team members and followers meet a leader, they should proffer solutions to what has gone wrong by giving direction ad instructions to the team, that will correct these defects.
Creative thinking. This is the ability of the leader to develop ideas that will improve on what exist, through innovation or invention of new ideas that will promote and grow what the team does.
Sense of Humor. Making team members and followers laugh is an art. A leader must strike that cord by identifying the funny side of issues, events, people and situations and make their team laugh about them. Creating a tense atmosphere to convey seriousness does not mean everyone in the room will take you seriously.
Courteousness. When leaders treat team members, followers and employees with respect, give them pat on their backs and create the feeling of importance around them, they feel obligated to draw closer and they get super-charged to carry on their task without much fuss.
Ego massaging. Occasionally, the leader needs to do this particularly when difficult personalities are involved. For these individuals, they want open recognition and mentioning of their accomplishments. Ego massaging is a tactics a leader uses to win over difficult persons particularly during crisis, conflict resolutions and when building alliances with others, to enable them to have a formidable ally when dealing with competitors or opponents.
Acknowledgement and praise. This is a critical soft skill of a leader that helps in building effective teams. The leader should have an eye for best practices, achievements and efforts of team members. Great performances should be acknowledged, praised, commended and rewarded. Whenever a feat is achieved, the leader should show appreciation to the individual and every other member of the team who made it possible. Team members must be celebrated based on their contributions, and fairness must be applied to all concerned.
Reading situations and thinking before speaking. This soft skill helps a leader to evaluate the events and reactions of those affected before addressing issues. Every leader must read the faces of their followers, their inner pains, concerns and their expectations before speaking.
Attentiveness. To be attentive is to listen to what is being said with rapt attention, without interrupting the speaker. A leader may know details about an issue and may feel bored with the speeches of team members, However, the leader must take out time to hear out what is being said, why things are the way they are and should be the last to make pronouncements.
Interpersonal Relationships. This include social skills that enhances rapport, understanding, compassion, empathy, friendliness and sensitivity to the needs of others. Building relationship across social groups, different races, culture and peoples remain an asset to a leader and will create better result than anything else.
