Leadership is a process that begins from the bottom rung of the ladder. It never starts from the top.  Indeed, a wise man said the only thing that starts from the top is the grave. The best approach is to climb steadily and be focused on the destination.

In doing this, the leader draws their strength from educational training, skill acquisition, hands on experience and continual engagement in leadership activities to sharpen their skills.  To be an effective leader, educational qualifications acquired from polytechnics and Universities may not be enough.

There must be unwavering effort by the individual to pursue personal development by frantically engaging in the three activities listed below.

  1. Learn from the best. Who are the best in your field right now? If you don’t already know, find out now. These are the people you need to know, in detail. How did they get so good?
  2. Read up. There are probably dozens if not hundreds of technical manuals, websites and magazines on honing your skills. Read as much as you can
  3. Probably the number one way to get better. Practice as much as you can. Get a lot of jobs (that’s not always easy, I know) and do as much work as possible until you can do it with your eyes closed (that’s a real feat for artists and photographers.)
