The decisions of a leader influence their people in the following ways;

  1. It creates new perspectives within their teams and followers. When a leader makes a decision, three things happen. It either falls short, meets expectations or goes beyond the expectation of their followers. When the case is the first, there are bound to be misgivings while the other two conditions poses little or no threats. In any case, the leader’s decision creates a new perspective which could meet the acceptance or frowning of the people. If the process of the decision was through collaboration and consultation, the level of rejection of the outcome becomes minimal and manageable. But when the decision is communicated as an order or a command, there is bound to be resistance, as it may be viewed negatively by followers and team members.
  1. Makes their followers abandon their personal beliefs. A sound decision is a process of reengineering of problems and solutions. The logic that goes into the solution process capture the elements of sincerity, commitment to make a better choice from various alternatives and showing a new path of what is possible and sustainable.
  2. Gives hope of a better future to team members. For many individuals, the leader is always right, no matter what. They see the decisions of the leader as a pathway to a better future, without contemplating environmental changes which can render the decision with uncertainties. This is because many leaders only give the bright side of their decisions and they work extremely hard to shield their followers from the inherent risks. When the risks overshadow the benefits of the decision, the leader wonders at the lack of understanding of their followers and team members. This is what lack of full disclosure can result in.
  1. It gives direction and a sense of belonging to the team. A decision is a chosen course of action and a defined direction for a team. It creates traction and converges the focus of all team members. When a leader makes and communicates a decision, the implementation process must flow in the direction of the decision. Aside, all actions and activities must be built around the decision to ensure its realization, using the most effective collaborative effort.
